I have once again self-assessed my skills in teaching Computing. This audit has been very interesting, as I can see how far I have come.
I have broken down and assessed the results of my Computing Skills Audit, something which has proved to be enlightening and should be very useful for my future studies. I have developed an action plan, which can be found at the bottom of this post. This will form the basis of my self directed learning, I have grown up surrounded by technology and social media, so it is perhaps not surprising that I have self-assessed myself as 'very competent and confident' on topics such as Twitter, Facebook, tablets, and the working of search engines. My confidence in areas such as spreadsheet and presentation software reflects my own school ICT background, which was heavily focused on Microsoft Office and included completing the old ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence). Other school subjects, especially English Language and Design Technology, included considerable use of this software. A more detailed breakdown of the areas where I am confident and secure in my understanding: A - I am very competent and confident KS 1 Floor Turtles e.g. Bee-Bot, Pro-Bot Computer Networks (E.g. LAN, Internet, workings of search engines) Presentation Software (E.g. Prezi or PowerPoint) Spreadsheets Databases Video Editing (E.g. Movie Maker) Blogging Tablet/Mobile Devices Video Recording/Cameras Printers (Trouble shooting) Interactive Whiteboard/Projectors Voting/handheld devices Identify areas of the curriculum that could be enhanced by Computing Access information relevant to teaching from the internet Locate and access computer and non-computer materials, resources, support Use Computing to prepare and adapt teaching materials. Identify and detail the resources, software /hardware to support the lessons Awareness of the role of the teacher in respect of child protection and Computing Protection of pupils from unsuitable areas of the internet Copyright regulations The Data Protection Act Health and Safety regulations B - I am competent and confident KS 2 Programming Languages e.g. Scratch, Kodu KS 1 Programming Language e.g. ScratchJr, Daisy the Dinosaur, Lightbot Graphics Music Creation and Podcasting (E.g. Garage Band, Audacity) Animation (E.g. I can animate App) Mobile App Publishing (E.g. Blippit) Use Computing so that it does not obscure the subject content/message Use Computing for administration systems for recording progress Support teaching and learning Cover the programmes of study of the National Curriculum for computing Teach computing elements of the other core and foundation curriculum subjects Improve learning of able children and those with special educational needs How to organise and manage group work How to approach whole class teaching How to organise computing equipment to allow pupils access Identifying where they need extending and supporting Identifying how computing influences objectives and outcomes Deciding whether or not all pupils have access to the objectives and outcomes Determining how group work may affect pupil capability There are also areas in which I still need to strengthen and develop my skills, or gain new knowledge entirely. I will focus on this in the coming months. A detailed breakdown of the areas where I am less confident and secure in my understanding: C - I have an adequate level of competence but wish to strengthen my skills Coding in HTML KS 2 Physical computing devices e.g. Crumble controller, Codebug, Makey Makey I have used the above information to create a new action plan. This also includes some uncompleted targets from my old action plan:

Now I have completed two PGCE placements, I have decided to re-audit my skills in Computing. The results are presented below, and will be used to formulate a new Action Plan. I have included my original self-assessment for comparison, as this will show me how I have developed as a practitioner, and areas where I need to concentrate further. My new grades are shown in red.

There are many areas in which I need to strengthen and develop my skills, or gain new knowledge entirely. These mostly relate to technologies which were developed or more widely used after I stopped formalised ICT lesson, and were introduced into schools with the new Computing curriculum. A detailed breakdown of the areas where I am much less confident and secure in my understanding: C - I have an adequate level of competence but wish to strengthen my skills
My Action Plan
A key part of the PGCE Computing Course is continuous self-assessment, via skills audits. I will use these audits to assess my personal computing skills, and my knowledge and confidence in teaching computing at Key Stages 1 and 2. Having completed this at the beginning of the course, I will now analyse the results and create an action plan to direct my self study. The plan will be posted on this page, and should help to develop my skills, and help me to become a better, more reflective practitioner. The grades below relate to my self-assessed level of competency and understanding. A I am very competent and confident. B I am competent and confident. C I have an adequate level of competence but wish to strengthen my skills. D I feel competent at few or no aspects and need considerable training and support. Level of knowledge and/or skill in the following: KS 1 Floor Turtles e.g. Bee-Bot, Pro-Bot B KS 1 Programming Language e.g. ScratchJr, Daisy the Dinosaur, Lightbot C KS 2 Programming Languages e.g. Scratch, Kodu D KS 2 Physical computing devices e.g. Crumble controller, Codebug, Makey Makey D Computer Networks (E.g.
